This video, photo and sound piece was created and exhibited during the AiR Artisan Residency in Sefrou and Fes, Morocco in 2014.
I created the soundtrack, conducted the interviews, and did the majority of the video editing. Brilliant still photos by Sonia, brilliant photo "composites" (the quick moving images) by Cat, and general collaboration on creative decisions by all.
My artist's statement for the piece:
For this project Alex Schmidt decided to look at patterns in artisan life: patterns among the shared experiences of artisans, patterns in daily work life, and patterns in sound. The piece reflects the rewards of patience to be found in repetitive work as well as the possible end of that type of work. For the sound portion of the piece, she took inspiration from Gnawa music rhythms and their repetitive nature. Interview styles inspired by those used to conduct tech usability research.
